A new MO disk system with a recording density four times that of a current DVD-RAM has been developed using a conventional optical head, which has the same wavelength of 660 nm and NA of 0.60 as a DVD head. It was confirmed by using domain wall displacement detection (DWDD) technology, an alternating sampled servo, laser annealing of the inter-track area, and PRML that a recording density of 15 Gbit/inch^2 with a track pitch of 540 nm and bit length of 80 nm has sufficient system margins. A new 1-bit distributed address format achieved a redundancy of 23%. When further progress in these technologies is made, it is expected that a recording density of over 30 Gbit/inch^2 will be achieved by using blue lasers.
