Servo writing for a hard disk drive needs to be done after certification of the medium using a magnetic head. A lubricant layer thus is present on the magnetic layer during the servo writing process. When thermomagnetic print is applied to the hard disk, decomposition of lubricant on the medium is an issue. Printing can be accomplished at temperatures below the lubricant decomposition point. Because the printing should be done in a short interval to avoid thermal diffusion, the effective H_c is much higher than the static H_c. In this process, the dynamic effect should be suppressed. To solve these issues, printing is performed using a small change in H_c by applying low temperature heating and a pulsed magnetic field (0.1 ms). To apply the pulsed magnetic field, the dynamic H_c in the unheated area increases and the divergence of H_c remains large enough. The principles and equipment for this printing method are shown and the possibility of commercial production is discussed.
