Conventional parametric design of engineering objects relies on the iterative re-use of numerical analysis programs which are inflexible and expensive on computer resources. It is generally impossible to redesign unsatisfactory parts of the design or to optimize particular parameters without repeating the complete analysis. In order to overcome these limitations, we supplement analysis with intelligent constraint-based reasoning. In general, we use analysis programs only to set out an initial trial design description, after which constraint reasoning is used to carry out redesign and optimization. We describe different constraint representations which simulate the analysis process, and we explain why a binary constraint network was selected for our system. Partial redesign of unsatisfactory portions of the design is achieved by using the individual inter-parameter relationships expressed in the binary network both for determining dependencies and for implementing changes to the design description. Reference is made to the design of a concrete beam to illustrate these ideas.
