Our goal is to define more clearly how humans parse natural language. To do so, as this phenomenon is a very complex one, we have tried to define it by the way it falls : namely, we have concentrated our attention on the problem of garden path sentences. According to Marcus, humans cannot treat this type of sentence because they process language deterministically in a buffer of five cells, through a window of only three contiguous cells. So, we implemented a system able to parse English, and particularly garden path sentences, in a deterministic way, and we tried to verify this rule. However, we found some exceptions which led us to refine this criterion : there are cases where people tend to decide beforehand the pattern of the sentence they are reading, and that also leads to garden paths.
