The leakage of some UV-absorbing materials occurred when the cells of Saccharomyces rouxii strain K122 grown in hypertonic media containing NaCl were suspended in water at 5℃ for 1 hr, but not when the cells grown in NaCl-free media suspended in the same manner. The UV-absorbing materials leaked from the cells grown in various hypertonic media containing other compounds substituted for NaCl such as glucose. The materials also leaked from the cells incubated only in the hypertonic solutions containing NaCl or glucose at 5℃ or 30℃ for 2 hr. The leaked materials were considered to be substances metabolically related to nucleic acids and to be derived from the cold acid-soluble fraction of the cells. The viability of the cells after leakage of the UV-absorbing materials was almost entirely maintained.The leakage of the UV-absorbing materials from cells grown in the NaCl medium was observed in all the authentic strains of S. rouxii tested, but not in those of S. cerevisiae.The leakage of the UV-absorbing materials observed in S. rouxii may be closely related to the asmo-tolerant regulation of the yeast.
