This article describes the Caliber 790, the first analog quartz watch with a movement less than l mm in thickness. Design features and fabrication process which made possible the realization of extreme thickness include:(1) Electronic circuit section Reduced thickness of quartz oscillator, low power consumption of oscillation circuit, and stable production of quartz oscillator piece and IC Package. (2) Converter section Uniform momentary output torque of rotor, and special process for handling magnetic material (soft magnetic iron or alloy) and securing magnet to the rotor. (3) Mechanism section Hand setting mechanism which functions in the same way as a mechanical watch but has a different construction philosophy, and enhanced manufacturing accuracy of reduction gears.
