A tower-type apparatus for wastewater treatment on a laboratory scale was constructed and its dynamic characteristics were examined to obtain design criteria for continuous operation.The tower consisted of five similar intermittent submerged biooxidater vessels. Each vessel was equiped with vertical plastic plates, providing a surface for biological slime attachment, and water inlet and outlet pipes.A recycle tank was set below the tower, from which water was pumped up to the top vessel of the tower. When the vessel was full, the pump was stopped, and after predetermined time, the water was transferred to the next vessel. In this way, the water in the tower was transferred from one vessel to the next and finally retuned to the recycle tank.During continuous operation, wastewater was supplied continuously to the recycle tank from a reservoir and excess water was withdrawn through an overflow pipe. A synthetic medium of glucose, urea and mineral salts dissolved in water was used as wastewater.The COD of the water in the recycle tank showed stepwise change when the water in the tower returned. A mathematical model was presented to describe COD change. Experimental results, both steady and unsteady state of continuous operation at various experimental conditions, were obtained and compared with the model. The results showed that in each experiment the η value, representing COD removal efficiency in a single passage of water through the tower was above 0.6.
