A High-Speed Remote Procedure Call Based on Adaptive Data Representation Conversion

Remote procedure call (RPC) mechanism based on the client-server model is widely accepted as a basic technology for the development of distributed systems. The runtime structure of an RPC can be modeled by using a stub layer and a transport layer. The stub layer includes specialized communication routines called stubs, which pack and unpack arguments of RPCs into and from RPC messages, respectively. The transport layer provides the stub layer with network-transparent message transfer functions. In order to increase the performance of RPC, the cost of both the stub layer and the transport layer should be reduced. This paper proposes "adaptive data representation conversion," which completely eliminates unnecessary data representation conversion in the stub layer, and describes the design and performance of a new high-speed RPC system called "KoKo" based on this technique. In KoKo, the data representation used in an RPC is negotiated prior to its execution. If no conversion is necessary, the arguments of the RPC are conveyed as they are, using the internal data representation regardless of their structure. The performance evaluation shows that KoKo outperforms other existing RPC systems.
