A method to recognize printed characters by matching partial patterns is introduced. Those partial patterns like line segments or various corners or separated segments are extracted from sample patterns and stored in memory. The values of similarity are calculated by the correlation of those partial patterns and partial region of input pattern at predetermined position. The scores are coutend in the relation of similarity value and weight value for each character. Input pattern is decided as the character which gives the maximum sum of scores. The advantages of this method are that it is strong against the noises like spots and grains and that required memory capacity is small compared to the method of pattern matching of whole pattern. A rocedure to extract partial patterns from sample patterns through the interaction between the designer and computer is described. Results of simulation for 40 of alphanumeric and symbol characters of ISO-B font are shown.
