In this paper, the author describes an effective algorithm for outline detection and hiddenline elimination, to be employed in a computer animation system using a CRT display terminal. In this algorithm, the detection of outlines of three dimensional objects, consisting of polyhedra, is regarded as an integral step in the hidden-line elimination procedure and make full use of the obtained outline data. A new concept of "vertex data of visibitliy" is also proposed, which is useful for checking up the visibleness of the lines connecting to a vertex quickly. The author gives some results of the simulation carried out to test the validity of this algorithm using FORTRAN.
