Although adaptive routing algorithms allow multicomputer direct networks to achieve better performance, several researches proved that selection functions could very much affect the performance. This paper proposes a speculative selection scheme in which the router uses network condition to select the right output channel in order to create more balanced traffic in the network thus increase the performance of routing algorithms. The network information exchange mechanism utilizes idle cycles in the links to broadcast local utilization to adjacent routers. We implemented a simulator for a speculative selection function that uses two-hop far-ahead, periodically updated information with Opt-y and Duato's Protocol routing functions using the mesh network. The experiment shows that speculation improves network performance as much as 10% depending on the routing function with various traffic types.
