KOFUNE, K. and KATSUMURA, T., Changes in Several Lyso-somal Enzymes in Plasma and Skeletal Muscle after the Strenuous Exericise. Abv. Exerc. Sports Physiol., Vol.8, No.3 pp.63-69, 2002. Five kinds of lysosomal enzymes, acid phosphatase, arylsulfatase, β-flucosidase, β-glucuronidase and cathepsin D, were measured simultaneously on plasma and muscle after both single bout of exercise (exercise 1) and after repeated exercise that had been done 24th after exercise 1 (exercise 2) in male Wistar rats. Animals in exercise 1 ran on a a rodent treadmill for 120min. The speed was gradually increased from 18m/min to 30m/min. Animals of exercise 2 ran for 120min 24th later initial bout of exercise. In muscle, the increased activity of cathepsin D and that of β-glucuronidase were observed immeditately after exercise i and 24=72h after exercise 2. The activity of acid phosphatase increased significantly 24h after exercise 2, whereas the activity of arylsufatase did not. In plasma, there was no significant increase in the activity of all of the lysosomal enzymes after exercise 1. The significant incerases in the activity of cathepsin D and that of β-glucuronidase were also observed immediately after exercise 2, but these increases were higher compared with those observed after exercise 1. The significant increase in the activity of β-glucosidase and that in acid phosphatase were observed immediately and 24h after exercise 2, respectively. There was no significant increase in the acivity of arylsulfatase after exercise 2, as in the case of exercise 1. In plasma, the significant increases in the activities of two kinds of enzymes, cathepsin D and β-blucuronidase, were observed immediately after exercise 2. Severe muscle damage was observed after exercise 2 but not exercise 1. Thus, the response of lysosomal activity to exercise differs among lysosomal enzymes, and the increases in the cativities of certain enzymes in plasma were accompained with exercise-induced muscle damage.
