Sports Physiol., Vol.8, No.1 pp.17-21, 2002. Intramuscular variability in fascicular atchitecture was determined in human medial gastrocnemius muscke (MG) in vivo. Seven male subjects exerted isometric plantar flexion torque while fascicle length, pennation angle and muscle thickness were determined at distal, central and proximal part along the medio-lateral center of MG by ultrasonography. As for the fascicle length, the effect of the location difference was not significant (p>0.05), whereas singificant effects were found for pennation angle and muscle thickness (P<0.05). Pennation angle in the proximal part was significantly larger than that in distal and central parts (P<0.05). Muscle thickness in each part was significantly (P<0.05) different from each other (proximal>central>distal). We further showed that the estimation of the physiological cross-sectional area, using the fascicle length and pennation angle derived from a specific portion within a muscle, was sucstantially affected by architectural inhomogeneity.
