NEYA, M. and KAWAHARA, T., Time-dependent Changes in Total Hemoglobin Content and Blood Volime During Prolonged Training And Detraining. Abv. Exerc. Sports Physiol., Vol.8, No.1 pp.9-15, 2002. The purpose of this study was to investigate time-dependent changes of vascular volumes and hematological status during prolonged traiming and detraning. Nine untrained males [age 20.1±2.4(SD)yr] cycled at 60% fo maximal oxygen uptake in two 30-45 min sessions per day, 3days per week, for 8 weeks followed by 4 weeks of detraining period. An increase in plasma volume by 12.8% was observed at 5-week and it induced an increasc in blood volume by 11.8%. Further, an increase in plasma volume by 20.2% and an increase in totak hacmogiobin content by 12.8%, which was measured by carbon monoxide alveplar method, at 8-week induced an increase in blood volume by 18.3&|% compared to the pre-training level. This training increased maximal oygen uptake by 6.2% at 5-week and by 10.2% at 8-week. In the other hand, four weeks detraining period returned the elevations of all of these parameters, to the pretraining level. These results indicate that a change in plasma volume by the training prior to total haemoglobin content may be a factor to affect maximal oxygen uptake. Furthermore, the cessation of training following the continual training rapidly returns increased vascular volumes and maximal oxygen eutake to the pre-training level.
