Adv. Exerc. Sports Physiol., Vol.6, No.3 pp81-84, 2000. This investigation was conducted to assess glucose metabolism in exercised muscle after high-intensity exercised by pedalin maximally for three. 30-s bouts, with 5-min intervals of rest, followed by a 60-min recovery period in supine position. F-fluoro-2-deoxyglucose (FDG. 150 MBq) was injected intravenously and a 4-min PET scan was performed at midthigh level starting 45 min after injection. In addition, a 45-min dynamic scan was performed on one of the subjects startion at the time of injection and blood samples were taken for determination of the plasma FDG radioactivity curve and blood glucose concentration. The FDG uptake by the exercised leg was markedly higher than that by the non-exercised leg in both subjects. In addition, the specific muscle that accumulated FDG was different between the subjects. Thses results suggest that there was individual variation in the muscles used during pedalin. Therefore, the FOG-PET technique may be useful for identifying individual patterns of muscle use during esercise. We speculate that these results may be useful for generation maps of glycogen resynthesis in the muscle during the recovery period, and that this method may also be useful for quantitative estimation of glucose metabolism.
