We investigated aged-related changes in body temperature during tredamill exercise in rats and also the effects of exercise training. In Experiment 1, young (10 month-old and aged (25 month-old) male Fisher rats ran for 30 minutes at various running speeds (5-12.5 m/min), and rectal temperature (Tre), heatt rate (HR) and oxygen uptake (Vo2) were compared. In both age groups, the degree of Tre rise. HR and Vo2 during eicrcise rose in proportion to the running speed. When compared at the same running speed, however, magnitudes in aged rats were greater than in young rats (p<0.05). In Experiment 2, rats of two age groups (young: 10 month-old, aged: 22 month-old) were each divided into control and training groups. Training was performed for 4 months by treadmill running. Vo2 Max in aged trained tars increased. The degree of Tre rise folowing 30 minutes exercise lowered in aged trained rats. Vow against HR during the excrcise increased in the aged trained rats. These results suggest that the higher body temperature rise during exercise in aged rats is due to a lowering of maximum exercise pergormance rather than due to a fall in thermoregulatory function.
