Bacteria that can metabolize at least six polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (biphenyl, naphthalene, phenanthrene, anthracene, pyrene, and chrysene) were found to be distributed widely in nature. The distribution of bacteria that could metabolize phenanthrene was independent of petroleum pollution. All isolates of bacteria metabolizing pyrene or anthracene could also metabolize phenanthrene.
