The influence of the penicillin hydrolysis rate and dilution rate or specific growth rate on the productivity of a penicillin fermentation is quantified. Comparison of the theoretical with the experimental data suggests that hydrolysis largely accounts for the apparent critical minimum growth rate necessary to maintain maximum productivity.
