This paper proposes the concept of visual interaction on advanced image database systems. The authors have been developing a graphic symbol database called TRADEMARK and a full color image database called ART MUSEUM. The systems operate on multimedia data such as image, numerical, and linguistic data to provide a visual interaction environment. They have been designed with a view to interpretation as well as representation of multimedia data. Figure and color perception models of human vision are proposed for semantic interpretation of multimedia data. Content retrieval algorithms for sketch retrieval, similarity retrieval, and sense retrieval, have been designed on these models. These algorithms are adjustable to each user's interpretation criteria, which provide an intelligent personal environment. They have been tested and evaluated on the above systems. For example, the TRADEMARK system recalled the original image among the first ten candidates with ratios of 95% and 97% in sketch retrieval and similarity retrieval for each user.
