New computer architecture should be exp1ored from the following points: (i) High functional and high performance computers are required in various application areas such as signal processing, scientific computation and artificial intelligence, for realizing more powerful and faster intelligent systems. (ii) Software productivity is getting more and more serious as larger and more complicated systems are developed. Especially, the productivity of parallel and highly concurrent software systems will be much more serious. A new programming paradigm, e.g., declarative style language based on logic or functional programming concept, is required in order for soft-ware to be developed in more mechanical way. A new computer system is also required which can execute efficiently such declarative style programs. (iii) Recent advances in VLSI device technology are noteworthy. It is easy to develop a large amount of tiny processor chips. The important issue is now how to utilize these large amount of VLSI devices effectively to implement a high speed computer systems. A new computer architecture is required to solve this problem.
