A method is proposed for automatic diagnosis of a dynamic system based on a knowledge engineering technique. Basically, the method uses only knowledge about a system decription and does not require any knowledge concerning failure causality. Inference is made in each of the four diagnostic steps: i)expectation value computation, ii)suspects computation, iii)suspects discrimination using observable data and iv)suspects discrimination by test generation. One of three inference procedures is used where appropriate in selection: forward chaining, backward chaining and resolution. This method can diagnose in principle all kinds of failures that are logically diagnosable if the system description is appropriate. The capability of the method is demonstrated by an application example to a nuclear reactor feed-water system.
