Estimation of Oxygen Absorption Coefficient and Power Consumption in a Stirred-Tank Fermentor

The oxygen absorption coefficient with a sulfite oxidation method and power consumption of water agitation were measured in a series of different-sized fermentors equipped with two sets of disk turbines with six flat-blades of standard dimensions. The working volume of liquid tested was in the range from 1 m^3 to 100 m^3. The empirical equations for the estimation of volumetric oxygen absorption coefficient, K_v (kg mol/m^3 h atm), and power consumption under aeration, P_g(kW), were expressed as follows, using vessel diameter D_t, and liquid depth, H_l, as parameters. K_v=3.0×10^<-4>D_t^<0.2>H_l^<-1.3>N^<1.5>D_i^<2.3>V_s^<0.6> P_g=7.7×10^<-5D>_t^<0.91>H_l^<0.04>N^<3.15>D_i^<5.7>V_s^<-0.25> These equations were convenient for the direct estimation of K_v and P_g from the operating parameters.
