Growth of Trichoderma reesei in a pH-Cycling Environment : Application of a Single-Species Logistic Law

The behavior of growth and the reciprocal of specific cell yield (φ(t)) of Trichoderma reesei in a pH-cycling environment (upper limit 5.2,lower limit 3.0) were studied. Specific cell yield is defined as the ratio of specific growth rate over substrate uptake rate. At the controlled pH of 5.2,cell growth was 1.38 times higher than that in the pH-cycling environment, but cellulase yield was 1.3 times lower. In different experiments, the span of pH-cycling was varied by changing the lower pH limit while keeping the upper pH limit at 5.2. The variation of φ(t) was found to be periodic during cultivation, and its amplitude varied with the span of pH-cycling. As the span of pH-cycling was decreased, cell growth increased and tended towards the level attained at the controlled pH of 5.2. The relationship between cell growth and φ(t) could be analysed by a singlespecies logistic equation. The analysis is discussed in this paper.
