For the control of aspartase production and for the design of a reactor using immobilized Escherichia coli cells, a simple and useful equation was derived. In a continuously stirred tank reactor the rate equation was shown to sufficiently satisfy the experimental results obtained with several input concentrations of fumaric acid. Kinetic constants of the rate equation obtained, however, were found to be altered by changing of the input concentration of fumaric acid. This phenomenon may result from the change of diffusibility of fumaric acid and _L-aspartic acid in gel matrices depending on the structural change of polyacrylamide gel caused by the variation of the input concentration of fumaric acid. Then the kinetic constants were represented as the function of the input concentration of fumaric acid.
