Changes in the volumetric oxygen transfer coefficient(K_La)were measured in a laboratory horizontal rotary fermentor(HRF)with different microbial systems. Specific surface renewal rates of the liquid film per unit contact time(t_C)with the gas phase were correlated with the rotaiton speed. From this fractional surface renewal rate(s)and t_C were calculated. The liquid film mass transfer cofficient(K_L)was directly correlated to the rotation speed(N)of the HRF as K_L∝√<N>; this was verified experimentally.
