Typically programs in a university environment are written, debugged, executed, and then discarded. Most of their time is spent in the debugging phase of program development. Therefore, in order to optimize system resources, a compiler is needed which is designed to execute programs quickly, and to produce detailed diagnostic messages. PLUM is an interactive diagnostic PL/I system which has been developed at the University of Maryland for the Univac 1100 series computer. It compiles source programs directly into machine language and immediately executes them.
