The continuous surveys of heart disease in school children have been carried out in Otsu City, since 1960 and the whole Shiga Prefecture since 1967, and we had reported that the incidence and relative frequencies of congenital heart disease were estimated to be about 0.3 per cent. The results of the normal electrocardiogram recorded at the same time in healthy children were already reported in detail by Sirai. This paper was therefore designed to examine the influences of age, sex and body build on the electrocardiogram. As each wave of the electrocardiogram shows some correlation, for example, as presented by cancellation experiment, multivariate analysis should be adopted for the interpretation of the electrocardiogram. Materials and Methods: So-called normal electrocardiogram recorded in healthy subjects have the differences by age, sex and body build. For the purpose of proving the existence of these differences, the subjects were divided into six groups which consisted of 70 boys and 60 girls with normal body build at the age of 13 to 14, 30 boys and 46 girls with obese body build in the same ages whose Rohrer's index were over 160 and moreover 81 males and 90 females with normal body build at the age of about 20. This comparative study was performed by multivariate analysis, recording standard twelve-lead electrocardiogram and measuring forty-five amplitudes of Q, R, S and T waves and the height, weight, chest circumference and siting height of the subjects. Results: 1) The amplitude of T in lead V_1 in obese children aged 13 to 14 was positive and that of normal children of the same age was negative and this amplitude showed difference at the 0.01-significance level. The amplitude of R in lead V_5 also presented difference at the 0.01-significance level and was smaller in obese children approaching that of about 20 years of age. 2) In each group, with the height, weight, chest circumference and sitting height as fixed variables and with amplitudes of Q, R, S and T in leads I, aV_F and V_5 as random variable, linear regression analysis was carried out.
