Pharmacologic action of various catecholamines on cerebral circulation has been studied by many investigators. But the results are somewhat con-flicted, because of the weakness in response of the cerebral arteries to catecholamines, anatomical complexities of the cerebral arteries and method-ological difficulties in measuring of their blood flow. Recent advance of electromagnetic flow-meter makes it possible to measure not only mean flow but also phasic flow on the intact blood vessels. The present study was designed to investigate the effect of intravenous or intra-arterial administration of catecholamines on the cerebral blood flow by using this method. Materials and Methods.' Forty-three mongrel dogs weighing 12-26kg were used. They were anesthetized with intravenous injection of 25-30mg/kg of sodium pentobarbital. An endotracheal cannula was inserted and respiration was maintained with respirator. Systemic blood pressure (BP) was monitored continuously with a strain gauge pressure transducer connected to a catheter inserted into the thoracic aorta via the femoral artery. The carotid arteries or vertebral arteries were exposed surgical-ly and dissected free from the surrounding struc-tures so that adequate positioning of the probes of the flow meter was possible. Blood flow through the internal and common carotid arteries (ICF and CCF) or the right and left vertebral arteries (RVF and LVF) was deter-mined by using two electromagnetic flowmeters (ICF with a probe of 1-2mm in innerdiameter, CCF with a 3-5mm, and VF with a 2-3mm). Either a combination of ICF, CCF and BP or that of RVF. LVF and BP was recorded simultaneously with a penwrighting oscillograph. They were recorded continuously before, during and after the following procedures: injection of adrenaline hydrochloride (Ad), l-noradrenaline bitartrate (NA) or l-isoproterenol hydrochloride (Isp) to the femoral vein (intravenous injection), direct injection of each of these amines into the ipsilateral or contralateral side of the arteries (intra-arterial injection), and intra-arterial injection of each of them one minute after the intra-arterial administration of propranolol (Prop). The peripheral phasic flow curve were analysed into such two phases as rapid phase and slow phase (Fig. 1) and changes in blood flow in these two phases (RPF and SPF), mean flow and RPF: SPF ratio in the internal carotid artery were in-vestigated.
