The contribution of neurogenic inflammation in the development of edema from a burn injury induced by hot water at 55℃ for 30 s was studied in Sprague-Dawley rats. The magnitude of the heat-induced extravasation measured by an exudation of Evans blue was much stronger in the foot than in the back where innervation density was low. Post-burn foot volume changes were not different between the nerve-intact rats subjected to sciatic and saphenus nerve denervation, demonstrating that the neurogenic component is negligible in its contribution to heat edema under this burn condition.
