The effectiveness of wood as a shock absorber to protect transport storage casks against drop impact was tested. The difference in the elasto-plasticity of wood and metal material was determined in drop tests by using a prototype shock absorber of wood covered with a steel sheet. The wood was compressed in the drop test, destroying many of its cell voids, and its strength strongly depended on the compression direction. Its surface sectional area remained the same. The impact characteristics of the wood were modeled and a three-dimensional drop-impact analysis of woods effectiveness as a shock absorber was performed. The deformation behavior of several kinds of wood used as shock absorbers could be predicted well analytically.
