The critical pressure at which an elliptical thin tube under external pressure will reach plastic collapse was determined by a simple formula. In the formula, the critical pressure depends on eccentricity of the elliptical tube, tube thickness, and yield strength of its material. The effects of these parameters on the critical pressure were investigated by using an elastic-plastic stress analysis with computer simulation software and an experiment on a steel tube with eccentricity of about 2 mm, thickness of 4 mm, and diameter of 270 mm. As the results of these investigations, it was shown that the formula can accurately estimate the critical pressure at which any elliptical tube collapses plastically.
