In this article, we report the effect of relative humidity on the friction and durability properties of magnetic disk surfaces coated with FDTS SAM (self-assemble monolayer) and Fomblin Zdol lubricants. The relative humidity varied in the range of 0 to 90%. The friction coefficients of FTDS SAM and Zdol lubricant coated surfaces increase with relative humidity due to the water condensation between the ball slider and disk surface. At a high relative humidity of 90%, FTDS SAM coated disk shows lower friction coefficient compared to 1.5-nm-thick Zdol coated disk. It may be because that FTDS SAM coated surface is more hydrophobic than Zdol lubricant coated surface. On the other hand, FDTS SAM coated surface shows lower durability compared to 1.5-nm-thick Zdol lubricant coated disk at a relative humidity of 90% though the FTDS SAM surface is more hydrophobic. This is because that there is no contribution of mobile molecules to durability in FDTS film, whereas the mobile molecules of Zdol lubricant provides replenishment to the lubricant depleted zone generating from the contact between ball slider and disk surface.
