A contact mechanics based wear model is developed to investigate the head / disk interface wear due to the intermittent contact at low fly height. For the first time, a transient non-linear wear analysis based on this model is performed to predict the wear history of the head / disk interface. In this model, wear volume is calculated by extended Archard's wear law; the contact force is calculated with a two-dimensional suspension / air bearing model; and the associated contact area is calculated with a quasi-static contact model.
