Lapped spot welding of aluminum plates is examined using a normal pulsed YAG laser, and the influence of experimental conditions on the weldability is discussed. The weld strength is investigated in relation to the irradiating conditions of the pulsed YAG laser, and an empirical formula of weld strength is presented. Heat conduction is analyzed by a finite difference method in which the dependency of the thermal constants of a test piece on temperature and the characteristics of the used laser beams are considered. Molten configurations under various conditions of laser irradiation are obtained by the numerical analysis. The weld strength is determined by using the molten configuration and the empirical formula.
