C315 MODAL OSCILLATORY STRUCTURE AND DYNAMIC PARTICLE ACCUMULATION IN LIQUID-BRIDGE MARANGONI CONVECTION(Marangoni convection)

Thermocapillary convection in a half-zone liquid bridge under a low ambient temperature condition was investigated experimentally. It is widely known that the flow regime changes from two-dimensional axisymmetric steady to three-dimensional oscillatory flow with the increasing temperature difference ΔT between the top and bottom surfaces of the liquid bridge. The critical conditions for the transition was determined in terms of the Marangoni number. Through the visualization with tiny particles in the test fluid, it was found that the flow exhibited in the oscillatory state certain polygonal modal flow structures depending strongly upon the aspect ratio of the bridge as well as ΔT. Further increasing ΔT, the flow field became once chaotic, and then a new kind of ordered structure, that is, dynamic particle accumulation with 'Twisted Loop' structure, appeared. The ordered structure was realized only in limited conditions determined by the aspect ratio and ΔT.
