Numerical study has been performed on the flow and temperature fields of SMES cryostat. The simulation condition is characterized by the very low temperature (4.5 - 40K) Helium gas natural convection environment, namely low velocity (<1.0m/s) and high density difference (>14 times). To study this system, pseudo-compressibility method has been applied to the Navier-Stokes solver including the modification for strong density variation with temperature. The computed results indicated the clear influence of thermal insulation and convection suppression plates on the change of flow and magnet heat loss.
