B306 EXPERIMENTS ON TURBULENT COMBUSTION IN A CLOSED-VESSEL WITH DIRECTLY INJECTED FUEL : NO_x MEASUREMENTS(Turbulent flame-2)

This paper presents an experimental study on the combustion of methane under direct injection spark ignition conditions. A constant volume combustion chamber was used for the experiments. Methane was injected into an air in the chamber at an injection pressure of 1.6MPa, and was ignited by a spark discharge at various positions and timings. Overall equivalence ratio was varied ranging from 0.6 to 1.2. The results showed that (1) the main burning time could be reduced considerably together with an increase in maximum combustion pressure when earlier ignition timing was used; (2) the maximum NOx concentration appeared at the overall equivalence ratio of 0.9; (3) NOx concentration increased with the increase of maximum combustion pressure. The NOx concentration is mainly determined by temperature and oxygen concentration in the burned gas. Effects of the ignition positions and the ignition timing on the NOx concentration are relatively small.
