The purpose of this paper is to investigate the combustion properties of methane, which is the main component of natural gas and biogas and to find out the methods for improving the turbulent combustion performance. To realize this, a new combustion technique, hydrogen addition to the methane mixture, has been proposed and studied quantitatively in detail. Consequently, it is shown that by adding only a small amount of hydrogen to the lean methane mixture, the turbulent burning velocity is substantially increased. Furthermore these mechanisms are discussed in view of the change in the local burning velocity due to the flame stretch. As a result, it is concluded that the change in the Markstein number among the mixtures, mainly because of the change in the Lewis number by hydrogen addition, accounts for the change in the turbulent combustion properties.
