An MHD topping and coupled gas tubine and steam turbine bottoming combined system was proposed which was driven by coal synthesized fuel provided thermochemically at the down-stream of the MHD unit. The efficiency of the system (case I) was compared with those of two other combined systems, namely an MHD and steam injection type gas turbine combined system (case II) and an IGCC system with conventional gasification (case III). Assuming the same unit efficiencies and the same temperatures at the heat recovery units, we showed that the case I exhibited the highest efficiency of 62.5% with 30% MHD unit efficiency. The present results emphasize capabilities of the advanced power generation with an efficiency being comparable to or higher than that of the IGCC system on the basis of state-of-the-art MHD and heat recovery technologies.
