A new technique has been developed for studying simultaneously the size and number density of particulate matter (PM) distributed from combustion chamber and diesel engine, called Cluster Rayleigh Debye model. This model incorporates laser light scattering and attenuation techniques in a complimentary fashion for the cases of scattering angles of (40)^0 and (140)^0. Helium-Neon laser light equipments, emitting monochromatic radiation at a wavelength of 632.8(nm), have been used as incident light sources. The S/N ratio can be increased using light chopper and dark boxes for experimental equipments. The comparison shows that there is a good agreement between the results of this optical method and those of filtering method (JIS-Japanese Industrial Standard) from previous experiments on steady and unsteady flames of combustion chamber. NFD-9M and NF-19SK Yanmar single cylinder direct-injection diesel engines using diesel oil were also operated to sample particulates. The analysis revealed that spherical primary particles were agglomerated together to form large aggregate cluster in most of the engine speed and load conditions. The application and results of this method has also been specifically summed up and discussed in this paper. It has been shown that this model can be used effectively to measure particle size and distribution at real time in most instances, especially for low concentration zones.
