Many characteristic length scales related to transport phenomena, such as mean free paths of energy carriers in solids and the range of intermolecular forces in liquids, fall in the 1-100 nm size regime under ambient conditions. Hence, if solid and liquid elements are confined in one or more directions to this size regime, their transport properties can be manipulated in unique ways. This paper presents a few examples of new heat and mass transfer effects in this size regime, and discusses possible applications in energy conversion and biomedical technologies.
