This paper provides details of two alternative methods for assessing initiation and the early stages of creep crack growth, which are currently being developed within the R5 procedures. The first of these, the time dependent failure assessment diagram (TDFAD) approach, is similar to the established R6 low temperature defect assessment procedure except that a "creep toughness" is used instead of the conventional fracture toughness and time dependent stress and strain parameters are required. The second method, known as the sigma-d (σ_d) approach, is based on evaluating the stress at a short distance ahead of the crack tip and this is used, together with conventional creep rupture data, to estimate the initiation time. This paper describes the background to these approaches and their application to the prediction of initiation times in tests performed on Type 316H stainless steel at a temperature of 550℃.
