SA-01-2(022) Life Prediction of Ligament Cracking in Thermal Fatigue Test Simulating Boiler Header(Life Assessment of Thermal Power Plant 1)

The accuracy of creep-fatigue life prediction for a ligament part of a boiler header was studied. Thick wall pipes (J1S STPA24, 350mm in diameter, 50mm in thickness) with stub holes simulating header geometry were used as specimens for thermal cycle tests, in which stub holes were locally heated by a high-frequency induction heater and cooled by air blow. Thermal cycle tests were periodically interrupted and inner surfaces of holes were visually inspected and observed by the replica method to measure the crack initiation life. The finite element models of thermal cycle test specimens were constructed for non-steady heat transfer analysis and elastic-plastic-creep thermal stress analysis. Thermal boundary conditions were determined based on the temperature distribution measured during thermal cycles. Creep-fatigue crack initiation life was predicted by the strain range partitioning method. It was found that the predicted crack initiation life agreed well with that experimentally obtained.
