A reamer bolt is one of the most important machine elements when fabricating a ship propeller system. In the actual assembly work, it is rather difficult to locate reamer bolts to the prescribed positions of the bolt holes. That is because each shaft composing the propeller system is usually manufactured by different companies. To overcome the difficulty concerning the assembly , reamer bolts are sometimes cooled down for easily inserting into the bolt boles. It is considered, therefore, that the bolted joint clamped with a reamer bolt shows complex mechanical behaviors. In this study, fundamental mechanical behaviors of bolted joint clamped with a reamer bolt are systematically analyzed using three-dimensional FEM as elastic contact problen. Important characteristics, such as contact pressure distributions on the reamer surface and the force balances of the joint, are quantitatively evaluated for the cases of being subjected to bending or shear forces.
