In this paper, we propose the concept of auditory pointing as an interaction approach using wearable systems. To demonstrate the feasibility of the concept, we developed an auditory display device for wearable use and performed experiments to evaluate the performance of users in pointing oprations. The device consists of an auditory localization module based on HRTF (head-related transfer function). motion sensors for tracking angular postures of the user's head and a hand, and a notebook PC to control the module and sensors; the device is capable of localizing four sound sources independently and in real time. Through experiments using subjects, we quantitatively evaluated the accuracy of recognizing the orientation of auditory icon, the time required for selecting the target icon, and the effect of noise during the pointing operation.
