A new metallic closed cellular material containing organic materials for intelligent materials or smart structures has been developed. Powder particles of polystyrene coated with nickel-phosphorus alloy layers using electroless plating were pressed into pellets by isostatic pressing and sintered in vacuum at high temperature. A metallic closed cellular materials containing polystyrene was then constructed. The compressive test results show this closed cellular material has a long plateau region and high energy absorption. These results indicate that this closed cellular materials can be used for energy absorbing and damping systems.
