Two kinds of composites, TiNi shape memory alloy (SMA) fiber reinforced 6061 Al alloy matrix composite and TiPd (Ni) SMA reinforced Ti matrix composite, were fabricated by various processing methods and their microstructure and thermomechanical behavior were investigated. 6061 aluminum alloy matrix composites reinforced by Ti-50.3at. %Ni SMA fibers were fabricated by vacuum hot pressing, hot extrusion and Spark Plasma Sintering. TiNi-reinforced Al alloy composites fabricated have interfaces between the TiNi fiber and Al alloy matrix, which are composed of multi-layer structure. Although the interface of the composites is slightly brittle, the yield stress of the composites was about 15% higher at 373 K than at 293 K. Ti-matrix composites reinforced by high-temperature Ti-25Pd-24Ni-lW SMA plates were also fabricated by sheath rolling. Ductile interfacial reaction occurred between the matrix and SMA plates by heating at 1123K for 3.6 ks after sheath rolling. The interfacial region consists of a triple-layered structure : Pd-poor layer, Ni-poor layer, and Ti-rich layer. The 0.5% offset stress of the composite increased with increasing temperature up to 473K. In both TiNi-reinforced Al and TiPd (Ni)-reinforced Ti composites, their increase in yield stress at high temperature is mainly caused by the residual compressive stress created in the matrix in association with shape memory effects of the embedded SMAs.
