This paper discusses damping of buildings on the basis of results of the Research Committee on Damping organized by the Architectural Institute of Japan, for the six years from 1994 to 2000. It also discusses relevant topics based on the recent results obtained by the author's group. Firstly, the importance of accurately estimating the inherent damping ability of buildings and the various causes of damping in buildings are discussed. Then, variation of dynamic behaviors of buildings with vibration amplitudes is demonstrated on the basis of full-scale data, and the important role of secondary members representing the stick-slip behavior in structural damping is emphasized. Next, design damping ratios currently used in various countries are reviewed. Then, the design values of damping ratios proposed by the AIJ Damping Committee are introduced to evaluate the habitability of buildings under wind-induced vibrations and structural safety. Finally, recently obtained damping ratios up to the 9th mode identified by using the FDD technique based on ambient vibration measurements of a 15-story building are introduced, and the efficiency of the FDD technique in evaluating dynamic properties of buildings is demonstrated.
