With the average age of the population rising, interest in health is increasing. In order to monitor the health status of individuals, long-term measurement of vital signs is important, and to realize this required is a means of unconstrained and non-invasive measurement in homes, hospitals and nursing facilities. This paper proposes an unconstrained and nonivasive system of measuring heartbeat and respiration periods using a phonocardiographic (PCG) sensor set on a water-mat or an air-mat. By calculating the autocorrelation function of the fully rectified sensor output or by matching the local pattern of the rectified sensor output with a reference one, the system not only measures the average periods but also the instantaneous ones of both heartbeat and respiration. Experiments will show that the system is able to measure the periods accurately despite decubitus.
