In this paper, we describe the technical and economic development potential for optimization of plan economics and performance for competitive power markets, and the use of new fuel cycles for waste minimization and sustainability. These developments stretch the potential throughout the 21^<st> century. We demonstrate and show the development potential of new advanced CANDU^[○!R]concepts. The philosophy is simple : maximize the pressure tube advantage, while incorporating the best features of available CANDU and Light Water Reactor (LWR) technology. AECL's Advanced CANDU Reactor ^<TM>(ACR) design, which ACEL has developed, represents a manageable evolutionary step, which enables major cost reductions to meet emerging market requirements. This evolution has opened up a pathway for key design developments, and the CANDU family will continue to evolve to meet longer-term market and energy needs. We give a general discussion of out development philosophy, and the smooth path to integrating new ideas into actual designs, all the time using economic, safety and performance tools in parallel. The next generation Advanced CANDU Reactor (ACR) design is discussed that will be licensed, deployed and market-ready in many countries by 2005. Looking beyond that near term horizon, we may envisage an ACR series, and we already have developmental R&D and "concept vehicles" (as does the auto and aircraft industries) that stretch on a continuous development pathway from 2010-2020,and then progressively extends further from 2020 and beyond. The ACR concept allows for enhancing the possible thermal cycles, ultimately leading to Supercritical Water Reactor (SCWR) systems (Generation IV in Department of Energy (DOE) terminology). Enabling features of the potential are due to the modular nature of the core, fuel and plant designs, which result in being able to optimize the reactor in a flexible manner for both current and future markets.
